We finished working just before suppertime, and I headed back down toward the stables and my other, dirtier, life. I was tired in a whole new way. My body didn’t ache except for my hand, from trying to grip that paddle, and my arms and back weren’t sore, but my head felt kind of dizzy after concentrating for so long. My eyes felt dry and stung. I wasn’t that hungry, either—I thought I might ask Solomon to snatch me a biscuit for dinner, and I could rest before evening chores started.

“Oh, good,” Solomon said. “You’re back in time to help me.”

I tried not to groan. “What do you need?” I asked, though I didn’t really want to be helpful, not really.

“I need you to take Little Bet out of the cage again. That giant pest won’t let me work on her momma at all.”

I smiled. This I didn’t mind. Little Bet might be naughty, but she was like being with a kid again.

“Sure, Solomon.”
